ARAB 211-Intermediate Arabic I with Dr. Hanada Al-Masri, Denison University

  • Days and Time: MTWF (everyday except Thursday), 1:30-2:20pm
  • Pre-req.: ARAB 112- or what is equivalent to two semesters of Beginning Arabic
  • Credits: 4hrs.

Description

This is an intermediate level course in Arabic. Similar to its prerequisite (ARAB 112), the course follows the same philosophy of integrating Modern Standard Arabic and spoken Arabic to reflect the language as used by native speakers. The course continues building upon the linguistic foundations started in ARAB111, and ARAB 112 and aims at developing the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing through two graded levels: for the first half of the semester, students study topics centered around their daily lives and activities. The second half of the semester takes students to a more advanced level where they start discussing topics moved away from the self and get closer to topics of a general nature like the history and geography of the Arab world, education, etc. In this course students will read longer passages (250-350 word), write on the paragraph level, listen to longer texts, and produce longer conversations. In addition, the course continues the practice of introducing Arab society, history, and culture. Overall, the course aims at improving students’ linguistic knowledge from Intermediate – low to the Intermediate-mid level, according to the ACTFL proficiency guidelines. At Denison, the course fulfills the GE requirement for Humanities (U). 

ARAB 301- Advanced Writing Skills with Dr. Kelly Tuttle, Earlham College

  • Days and Time: M,W 2:30-3:50 and R 2:30-3:20
  • Pre-req.: ARAB 212- or what is equivalent to four semesters of Arabic

Screen Shot 2017-03-31 at 3.42.25 PMThis is an advanced Arabic course focused on specifically on the skill of writing, though the other skills of speaking, listening, and reading will likewise be exercised and improved. We will work on building students’ writing skills from the sentence level to the paragraph level by focusing on connectors and cohesive links. We will then experiment with different types of longer writing including reports, creative writing, and the practical application of writing for work and correspondence.  Students will maintain a Grammar Memo throughout the semester to help them learn to recognize and avoid their own recurring errors. The prerequisite for this course is the equivalent of 4 semesters of Arabic at university level.

GERM 302 – Germany’s Young Generation with Dr. Gabriele Dillmann, Denison University

Screen Shot 2017-03-30 at 4.05.21 PMThis course explores Germany’s younger generations, the hopes and dreams, goals and aspirations, lifestyle and education, their relationship to older generations, and political attitudes of adolescent and young adults and how the country’s social, demographic, and political changes and developments influence and affect how young people think and perceive their place in life. This course is also a globally connected course in partnership with the American University in Bulgaria.

GERM 364 – The German Language Yesterday and Today, with Dr. Lee Forester, Hope College

  • Pre-req.: Equivalence to four semesters of German
  • Credits: 4hrs.

Description

An introduction to the history and development of the German language from runes (tribal times) to the present. Topics covered include an overview of modern German phonetics and phonology, the relationship of German to English and other European languages, changes in the German language, German dialects and a contrastive analysis of German and English phonemic systems specifically geared to language learners and future language teachers.
